When botulinum toxin, or Botox, is injected into the facial muscle, it halts the communication between the muscle and the motor nerves responsible for motion, effectively preventing the muscle from contracting. Since wrinkles form as the result of the muscles contracting repeatedly in the same way, relaxing these muscles eliminates wrinkles.
Botox Applications in Dentistry:
Although most Botox treatments are used to eliminate wrinkles from the forehead, the corners of the eyes, and in the lips and surrounding areas, there are also several dental applications that Botox can prove useful for. For starters, Botox injections around the lips can work in conjunction with cosmetic dental treatments to rejuvenate your smile. In addition, Botox can also be used to:
- Treat high lip lines
- Assist patients who are struggling with new dentures
- Retrain facial muscles for orthodontic cases
- Treat chronic TMJ and facial pain
Restylane is a dermal filler composed of the same naturally-occurring filler responsible for providing volume and hydration to your skin; hyaluronic acid (HA). As we age, our bodies start to lose HA, resulting in a loss of facial volume, deeper wrinkles, thinning lips, and saggier skin. Through injecting HA, volume and hydration will be restored to your skin, giving it a younger appearance.
Restylane Applications in Dentistry:
Similar to Botox, restylane can be used in conjunction with cosmetic dentistry to add volume to sunken areas of your face and rejuvenate your smile. In addition, it provides a variety of treatment options for lip augmentation, correcting asymmetrical lips and high lip lines, and creating an upturned smile.
Did You Know?
Although Botox and Restylane are popular with plastic surgeons, your dentist can safely deliver the injections and achieve the same results. In fact, dentists have far more extensive knowledge of facial muscles and anatomy, and can even perform these injections more comfortably than most plastic surgeons.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Am I a candidate for Botox or Restylane?
You may be a candidate for Botox if you wish to eliminate facial wrinkles, augment your lips to correct high lip line, are struggling with dentures, or wish to retrain or relax your facial muscles for orthodontic or TMJ treatment. You may be a candidate for Restylane if you wish to restore volume to sunken facial areas, enhance your lips through augmentation, or give your smile a younger appearance. What should I expect during my treatment?
Before your actual treatment, you will have a consultation with Dr. Miksa where you can discuss your treatment goals and determine the best course of action. Both treatments for Botox and Restylane are relatively simple and take only about 30 minutes, at the most, to complete. Prior to the treatment, Dr. Miksa will clean the injection site and may use a topical anesthetic to ease the discomfort felt during the injections. During your treatment, a tiny needle is used to inject either the Botox or Restylane into the desired area or areas of your face. The majority of patients report feeling minimal discomfort and are able to return to work and their normal activities after leaving the office.
What should I expect after my treatment?
After your treatment, you may notice some slight swelling and bruising, but this will decrease within a few days following treatment. With Botox injections, results are not generally noticed right away and it can take up to a week for the final results to appear. The results from Restylane injections are usually noticeable right away, however may take a few days for the final results to appear.
Depending on how much product is injected, how deep it is injected, the patient, and where it is injected, the lasting effects of Botox and Restylane can vary. Generally speaking, the effects of Botox injections last around 6 months, the effects of Restylane lip injections last from 3-6 months, and the effects of Restylane injections in other facial areas lasts about 6-9 months, sometimes more.
Are Botox and Restylane safe?
While each individual has the potential to react differently to Botox and Restylane, both injections are considered to be safe for the majority of people. In fact, in the United States, Botox represents one of the most common cosmetic procedures and is performed on millions of people annually. And Restylane is made up of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally-occurring substance in the body.
